Nearly 25 years after Common released “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” his anthemic love letter to hip-hop in its purest forms from his 1994 album Resurrection, the Chicago-bred emcee has revisited the theme on his new single “HER Love.” Bolstered by an unearthed beat crafted by the late great J Dilla and featuring a vocal hook by Daniel Caesar, the track outlines Common’s lifelong fidelity to hip-hop music and culture, while recognizing the artists that have galvanized the art form’s evolution.
“HER Love” is the lead single lifted from Common’s forthcoming twelfth studio album Let Love Have The Last Word, the follow-up to his acclaimed 2016 LP Black America Again due to arrive later this year, which shares the same title as his recently released book. “I love music so much,” Common confides in an official statement. “And on Let Love, this recommitting, rebirth and ‘re love,’ if that’s a word, just came to fruition. Music has always been the genesis of my creative life and it feels more than fulfilling, more than wonderful, and a joy that is hard to wrap up, to be giving my whole self to it again.”
Common has also revealed the expansion of his Let Love summer tour which kicks off July 11th in Denver. Explore tickets here and watch the Savanah Leaf directed video for “HER Love” below.
