NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Chaka Khan’s “Woman Like Me”

July 29, 2022 Albumism Staff

Three-and-a-half years on from her most recent studio album (2019’s Hello Happiness), the legendary songstress Chaka Khan has returned with “Woman Like Me,” an impassioned and incisive ode to female empowerment. Exploring the dichotomy between the perception and reality of identity, Khan sings, “Every girl ain't a stripper or on the Internet tryna hustle / Even if she was, who are you to judge? / You don't even know her strugglе / So, watch what you say / Stones that you're throwing may come back, comе back your way.”

Although details of a new album have yet to emerge, fans in select cities will have the chance to see Ms. Khan perform the new single alongside her many classics during upcoming tour stops. This evening, Khan headlines the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Napa, CA, which features an impressive lineup that includes Robert Glasper, Madlib, Snoop Dogg and Kamasi Washington, among other notable artists.
