NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Alfa Mist’s “4th Feb (Stay Awake)” & “BC”

Alfa Mist’s fifth album Bring Backs (2021) continued the upward trajectory of his musical profile and even flirted with the top 40 album chart in the UK. The London-born, self-taught musician and producer returns this year with a new album Variables that sees release on April 21st and promises to expand his uncategorizable palette still further.

To mark the announcement of the album, Alfa Mist has released two songs as lead singles. “4th Feb (Stay Awake)” features his vocals over a fogged-over, molasses thick groove before a luxurious string section kicks in and is typical of his introspection and unwillingness to be easily boxed in. The frenetic, free improvisation of “BC” demonstrates a band at one with each other and a ferocious desire to challenge themselves and find truth from the maelstrom of its seven-plus minutes.

Alongside the album announcement is news of a tour that takes in five European cities and six cities across the US from March through April. If his rapidly expanding discography is not proof enough, this burst of activity should leave you with no doubt as to his unceasing work ethic and restless creativity.
