The Virgin Suicides
Emperor Norton (2000)
Selected by Justin Chadwick
Based on the Jeffrey Eugenides novel of the same name and serving as Sofia Coppola’s directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides is a haunting yet simultaneously endearing examination of teenage angst in its many forms. Set in the late 1970s, it’s only fitting that the film’s soundtrack—a complement to Air’s atmospheric score—boasts a track listing full of some of the decade’s most memorable songs. Heart’s two familiar entries (“Magic Man,” “Crazy On You”) inject some energy into the affair, but it’s the soft-rock offerings from Gilbert O’Sullivan, Todd Rundgren, and 10cc that best define this trip down musical memory lane.
