I Am Sam
V2 Benelux (2002)
Selected by Andy Healy

So I have a confession to make. I’ve never seen I Am Sam, the acclaimed film from Jessie Nelson. I have however listened to the soundtrack more times that I can count. Commissioned by Sean Penn, the soundtrack (music from and inspired by) is a collection of Beatles songs covered by a vast array of artists. From Sarah McLachlan’s soulful “Blackbird” to Eddie Vedder’s searing “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” and Heather Nova’s blissful “We Can Work It Out,” the album is filled with fantastic retellings. The highlight for me is the sublime take on “Across The Universe” by Rufus Wainwright.
