Dead Presidents (Volume 1 & 2)
Capitol (1995/1996)
Selected by Justin Chadwick
Whereas the previous entry in this list served as a grand homage to 1970s rock, the Dead Presidents soundtrack serves as the Hughes Brothers’ love letter to the standout vintage soul of the decade. And it’s a legends-only affair, with nary a skippable tune and top-tier entries across the two volumes from the likes of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, The O’Jays, Sly and The Family Stone, Barry White, Stevie Wonder, among others. The film may have received mixed reviews upon its release, but its flawless soundtrack is unequivocally exempt from criticism.
