Boomerang
LaFace (1992)
Selected by Daryl McIntosh
By the early ‘90s, Hollywood was experiencing a renaissance of African-American artistry. A new generation of actors, producers and directors were behind some of the biggest blockbusters of the young decade, including Boomerang, the chic Romantic Comedy starring Eddie Murphy.
Released in the summer of 1992, the soundtrack is most widely known for introducing the songstress Toni Braxton with the single “Love Shoulda Brought You Home” and Boyz II Men’s colossal hit “End of the Road.” Smooth songs like Johnny Gill’s “There You Go” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Hot Sex” appealed to traditional R&B audiences along with fans of hip-hop/soul who collectively helped the LP peak at number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 en route to selling over 3 million copies.
