Baby Driver
30th Century (2017)
Selected by Andy Healy
When your main character deals with the world by shutting it out and listening to music, you better have an all-absorbing soundtrack. Putting the pedal to the metal, Baby Driver delivers a high-octane collection of tracks that never loses momentum. From the opening “Bellbottoms” from The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the soundtrack winds its way through soul with “Harlem Shuffle” and Motown bumps of “Easy” and “Nowhere To Run” while taking in the sites of rockers like The Dammed “Neat Neat Neat” and Queen’s “Brighton Rock.”
As an integral part of the movie (and its editing), Baby Driver presents the multi-genre world of its protagonist so perfectly as a soundtrack, and works as a great compilation of songs you’ll recognize and ones you’ll come to love. It’s one helluva ride.
