Album Artistry: Celebrating Melanie C's Dynamic Discography

January 9, 2022 Quentin Harrison

Editor’s Note: From Albumism’s inception back in 2016, we’ve remained unabashedly and unequivocally passionate about our mission of celebrating the world's love affairs with albums past, present and future.

But while our devotion to the album as an art form has remained steadfast, as evidenced by our deepening repository of individual album tributes and reviews, we’ve admittedly seldom taken the opportunity to explicitly articulate our reverence for the virtues of artists’ complete album repertoires as a whole.

Hence why we’ve decided to showcase what we believe to be the most dynamic discographies of all time in this recurring series. In doing so, we hope to better understand the broader creative context within which our most beloved individual albums exist, while acknowledging the full breadth of their creators’ artistry, career arcs, and overall contributions to the ever-evolving musical landscape.

We hope you enjoy this series and be sure to check here periodically for the latest installments.

MELANIE C

Studio Albums: Northern Star (1999) | Reason (2003) | Beautiful Intentions (2005) | This Time (2007) | The Sea (2011) | Stages (2012) | Version of Me (2016) | Melanie C (2020) | Interview

Not everyone can juggle a career within a group and a solo vocation—but Melanie C has done just that since 1996. Her tenure with the Spice Girls actively ran for five years, but beginning in 1999, she struck out alone with Northern Star. Instantly acclaimed both critically and commercially, Melanie C easily could have boxed herself in with the template of her first album.

Rather, over the years, she released an accomplished string of thoughtful pop recordings—first anchored in an AOR/adult contemporary pop framework and later kinetic synth-funk and dance genre textures with her most recent offerings, Version of Me (2016) and Melanie C (2020). The traditionalist outlier of Stages (2012) also evidenced further variety within her strata of albums, which is sure to continue as Melanie C moves further along the pike.

Quentin’s 3 Favorite Melanie C Albums of All Time:

1. Reason (2003)
2. This Time (2007)
3. Melanie C (2020)
