Album Artistry: Celebrating Gloria Estefan's Dynamic Discography

February 12, 2022 Quentin Harrison

Editor’s Note: From Albumism’s inception back in 2016, we’ve remained unabashedly and unequivocally passionate about our mission of celebrating the world's love affairs with albums past, present and future.

But while our devotion to the album as an art form has remained steadfast, as evidenced by our deepening repository of individual album tributes and reviews, we’ve admittedly seldom taken the opportunity to explicitly articulate our reverence for the virtues of artists’ complete album repertoires as a whole.

Hence why we’ve decided to showcase what we believe to be the most dynamic discographies of all time in this recurring series. In doing so, we hope to better understand the broader creative context within which our most beloved individual albums exist, while acknowledging the full breadth of their creators’ artistry, career arcs, and overall contributions to the ever-evolving musical landscape.

We hope you enjoy this series and be sure to check here periodically for the latest installments.

GLORIA ESTEFAN

Studio Albums: Cuts Both Ways (1989) | Into the Light (1991) | Mi Tierra (1993) | Christmas Through Your Eyes (1993) | Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (1994) | Abriendo Puertas (1995) | Destiny (1996) | gloria! (1998) | Alma Caribeña (2000) | Unwrapped (2003) | 90 Millas (2007) | Miss Little Havana (2011) | The Standards (2013) | Brazil305 (2020)

Gloria Estefan’s music was a staple on my mother’s car radio when I was growing up; even now she still loves her. That I developed similar affections for the Cuban born songstress was of no surprise to me and by my teens I had snapped up every Estefan album I could find. What kept me coming back to Estefan's albums through the years—whether they’re established works or recent pieces like 2020’s Brazil305—is her unflinching attention to detail.

With every lyric, arrangement and vocal imparted, Estefan spares no expense and has managed to endure changing tastes through the decades. Now, she holds fast as one of the steadiest figures in the recording industry. On top of all that, real emotion runs underneath everything she touches, so you know Estefan feels her work and that authenticity resonates with me.

Quentin’s 3 Favorite Gloria Estefan Albums of All Time:

1. gloria! (1998)
2. Mi Tierra (1993)
3. Unwrapped (2003)
